Lawrence R. Johnson, Principal

Lawrence Johnson is President and Founder of LJA. He has over 25 years of tax experience, of which the last 20 have concentrated on qualified retirement plans. A nationally recognized expert in retirement plan design and administration, Mr. Johnson has extensive experience in IRS compliance issues, IRS and DOL audits, and fiduciary responsibilities and issues.

Mr. Johnson is a frequent author and lecturer on the subject of qualified retirement plans and has been quoted in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, 401(k) Wire and Kiplinger Letter.

Mr. Johnson serves on the Tax Committee of the San Francisco Chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants; the Pension Advisory Board to Charles Schwab and Company; the U.C. Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees; and the Investment Committee Ð U.C. Berkeley Foundation. He received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. A CPA, he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries, the National Center for Employee Ownership, the ESOP Association and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference.

Daniel L. Bernert, Principal

Dan Bernert serves as Vice President, CFO and Retirement Plan Consultant for LJA. He works primarily with small-employer plans (fewer than 150 participants). Focusing on the special needs of employers and their employees, he works very closely with clients to design the optimum retirement plan to fit their objectives while meeting all compliance requirements. His clients span a broad range of industries including, but not limited to, professional services, real estate, health care, manufacturing, financial services and retail.

A frequent author and speaker, Mr. Bernert regularly conducts employee enrollment meetings and presentations to retirement plan advisory committees for his clients. He has also conducted presentations to accounting firms regarding small-plan design issues and opportunities created by new tax legislation and other rule changes.

Mr. Bernert received his B.S. degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Finance from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an M.S. in Taxation from Golden Gate University. He is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries and the Western Pension & Benefits Conference.

Ming Lin Yang, Principal

Ming Lin Yang has been a Principal and Vice President of LJA since 1987. She has practiced in tax matters for the past 25 years, of which the last 20 have concentrated on qualified retirement plans.

In addition to her client responsibilities, Ms. Yang is in charge of the daily valuation department of LJA, working closely with the firm's trading partners to ensure smooth operations. She works with a variety of types of retirement plans, including defined benefit, 401(k), and nonqualified plans. Her clients span a variety of industries, including high technology, retail, manufacturing and professional services.

Ms. Yang received her B.S. degree in Business Administration from Cheng-Chi University, Taiwan and her Masters degree in Business Administration from Golden Gate University. An Enrolled Actuary and a CPA, Ms. Yang is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries.

Thomas R. Mathews, Principal

Tom Mathews has been with LJA for more than 14 years and is responsible for the delivery of services to more than 60 clients. Before joining LJA, Mr. Mathews spent more than ten years with a large public accounting firm where he specialized in auditing public companies in the retail, financial and real estate industries.

Mr. Mathews works closely with clients of all sizes in the design, installation and administration of their qualified retirement plans (including profit sharing plans, money purchase pension plans, 401(k) profit sharing plans and Employee Stock Ownership Plans). His clients range in size from five to 1,000 participants, including approximately 40 clients with daily-valued 401(k) plans. He works with a number of law firm clients as well as clients in a variety of other industries, including high technology, retail, manufacturing, consulting and transportation.

Mr. Mathews is a frequent author and speaker on current developments in the retirement plan industry, qualified plans and related issues. He received his B.S. degree in Accounting from California State University, Hayward, where he graduated with honors. A CPA, he is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Western Pension & Benefits Conference, the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries and the ESOP Association.

Virginia Chaloeicheep, Consultant

Virginia Chaloeicheep has been a consultant with Lawrence Johnson & Associates (LJA) since 1997, focusing primarily on defined contribution plans. She has over 20 years experience working with qualified plans and employee benefits. Prior to joining LJA she worked for a large public accounting firm and an actuarial firm. She works with clients on designing, converting, terminating and auditing defined contribution plans, including 401(k) Plans, Money Purchase Plans and ESOPs.

Ms. Chaloeicheep received her B.S. degree in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the American Society for Pension Professionals & Actuaries, the ESOP Association and Western Pension & Benefits Conference.
